New Requirements for Street Name Signs

                   NEW M.U.T.C.D. REQUIREMENTS

                For Post-Mounted Street Signs

 

Street Signs:

New Minimum Reflectivity Requirement :

Nikkalite Super Engineer Grade sheeting exceeds the new requirements. 3M no longer makes an engineer grade sheeting,  they have an EGP (engineer grade prismatic) that looks just like their Hi-Intensity sheeting.

 

Size Requirements:

For roads with speeds 25 M.P.H. or less a 6” street sign is allowed.

2-Lane roads with speeds over 25 M.P.H. a 9” street sign is required.

Multi-Lane with speeds under 40 M.P.H. a 9” street sign is required.

Multi-Lane with speeds over 40 M.P.H. a 9” street sign is required.

 

Font Size and Case:

For roads with speed 25 M.P.H. or less  4” initial upper case with 3” lower case.

2-Lane roads with speeds over 25 M.P.H.  6” initial upper case with 4.5” lower case.

Multi-Lane with speeds under 40 M.P.H.  6” initial upper case with 4.5” lower case.

Multi-Lane with speeds over 40 M.P.H.  8” initial upper case with 6” lower case.

 

Acceptable Colors:

The only acceptable colors are green, blue or brown background with a white legend and white background with a black legend.

 

Compliance:

Street signs are to be replaced as the life of the sign dictates with the new requirements. All street signs should be replaced by 2018.
